As anyone living in Austin knows, and most people elsewhere probably know too, Austin has experienced significant population growth. So much, that Austin now ranks as the 10th largest city in the United States. With the population growth, and as you would expect, there has been an increase in traffic around Austin. So, in an effort to sustainably support Austin’s population and economic growth, Austin is in the middle of Project Connect. Project Connect is a joint effort between Austin Transit Partnership, CapMetro and City of Austin to expand transit options throughout the Austin area. Upon completion of Project Connect, residents and visitors will be able to reach Downtown Austin, the airport, South Congress, Q2 Stadium, Elgin, and more, all by train, light rail, and bus.
The Red Line: Upgrades to Existing Infrastructure
The Red Line, which currently operates between downtown Austin and Leander, with stops through Central and Northwest Austin, is being enhanced to increase frequency and capacity. The Red Line will connect to the larger transit system, including the eventual Green and Gold Lines, as well as the local and CapMetro Rapid bus routes. One of the more anticipated additions to the Red Line is the McKalla station, which is already under construction, and adds a stop just to the east of Q2 Stadium, providing great access to Austin FC matches, concerts, and other events.
